Moyer Bell Limited, New York & London, 1990. A Fine Royal Octavo (10”) in Near Fine dust jacket (a light crease from the time of publication on this inside front flap), with an Introduction for this printing by Nigel Nicolson. Cloth boards with bright gilt spine titles; 155 p. Illustrated throughout: 2 maps (one double-page) and photographs itemized in a two and a half-page list, including a frontispiece port. of the author taken in 1925. The First Edition was published by the famous Hogarth Press of Virginia and Leonard Woolf in 1926 (see Wilson, A Bibliography of Persia p.197).
From the Introduction, penned especially for this edition, the book is described as being “utterly different from a returned traveller’s lecture, with slides, to a suffering audience of his friends. It gives pleasure because it describes pleasure, illuminated by what Winifred Holtby called in a contemporary review of the book, ‘the lucid tranquillity of her lovely prose’.” Indeed Nigel Nicolson is a son of the author and, in that role, personally selected the photographs for this edition from his mother’s album, “almost all previously unpublished”, and “reveals many personal details of the journey omitted from the original 1926 edition.”
