This third edition presents the full text, including the author’s Introduction, of that published by Macmillan and Co in 1897, with a new, lengthy Introduction by John E. Flint of the University of Nigeria. xxx, + 743 pp., with two maps (neither fold-out) and 47 illustrations.
Kingsley made two trips to West Africa: 1893 and 1895. From the publisher: “The book is a vivid account of the travels of this intrepid explorer, written in a style often dramatic, sometimes analytical, but punctuated throughout with descriptions and incidents which are often hilarious. The sympathy and accuracy of her observations enable her to see the futility of considering the African from the European viewpoint and made her opinions on native law, religion, and trade of such prime importance in her day.”
