An uncommon autobiography of a pioneer to Vermilion. Beyond this community, and his homestead near it, he recounts incidents such as a trip on a scow from the Lesser Slave Lake:
“We say a group of people, who had started for the Klondyke (sic), that wanted to go down the lake and on to Edmonton. Mrs. Paul had a young baby to look after. We fixed up the end of the boat for Mr. Paul and his family and Mr. Davis. Some of our crew were acting foolishly – drinking, etc., so it was up to Mr. Paul and me to fix the boat and put tallow over the cracks and also we made some oars to replace those that had been broken. We launched our boat and loaded our freight on it; loaded on a number of people that had recovered from the fever of going to the Klondyke, rounded up our crew, and took the old-time Mounted Policeman, Mr. Butler, with us.” (p. 20) [Peel, 3rd, 7347]
