Social Services and Evangelism, Toronto, (1914). 256 pp. A very nice copy Signed by the author and two others on the f.f.e.p., dated 1918 and inscribed to R. Swanston for his ‘unfailing courtesy ’. Bright red cloth with man’s head & shoulders in roundel on front cover. That image is of “Old Ken” who’s photo is part of the array facing page 43, and whose story opens the chapter beginning on p. 34. Illustrated with photos of the areas recounted in the stories, 9 leaves in all with multiple images on each page, including the frontis. The Introduction is by Rev. Charles Gordon, better known under his pseudonym of Ralph Connor who authored several delightful fictional accounts of Canadiana.
Frank Alfred Robinson (b. 1874) was a Presbyterian minister whose tales came out of the mining and timber camps of the West, primarily British Columbia. Whale [Hudson’s Bay to Haro Strait, #1271] expressed the view that the author had “a fine sense of humour – his religious zeal seldom interferes with a good story.” [Edwards & Lort, 3022.]
Not uncommon, but a lovely copy; somewhat scarce signed.
