Letters between these brothers from 1843 to 1887 document some of the finest work of Engineers in Canada, and in particular their work in transforming the country “from an ox-cart economy into one of rapid transportation, powered by steam engines. The ‘iron horses’ were not as willing as humble oxen to be goaded over impossible roads; they had to have roads smoothed for them.”
