Apart from being a scarce item that is representational of self-advertising of a successful British Columbia business – Hinton Electric and its predecessor had shops in Victoria and later in Vancouver from 1899 until 1920 – there are other points worthy of note. The lithography is still bright, and, while stereotypical and anthropologically inaccurate, is a fine example of this art, and is reflective of the acceptable depiction of First Nations peoples common in that day. By way of an iconic example with roots south of the border, those who would ban Little Black Sambo books have ignored the historical importance of retaining such evidence of our roots, and thereby would at the same time destroy the evidence of our social evolution.
The descriptive notes of the fonds held by the City of Victoria Archives provide the following information: “Hinton Electric Company evolved out of George C. Hinton and Company around 1899. It was initially composed of John A. and George C. Hinton and operated in Victoria between 1899 to 1920. The company also operated a Vancouver Branch for several of these years. The company provided electrical machinery, wiring and supplies.” https://www.memorybc.ca/hinton-electric-company-fonds
