Blackie & Sons; London & Glasgow, (1959). 219 pp.; b&w illustrations by Edward Ardizzone as chapter headings, tail pieces and vignettes within the text; and 11 illustrations together with endpapers in colour. Red cloth boards with bright motif in gilt of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza mounted on horseback (mirrored as a vignette on the title page); mild dustiness to the top edge. The dust jacket, with wrap-around art, is price clipped; a small tear at the top, front gutter, and a small area on the top of the spine where the original glassine coating has a tear. There are no previous owner names or other markings: somewhat unusual for books often given to the young as gifts.
A wonderful re-telling of Cervantes’ enduring classic, lavishly illustrated with the art of one of Great Britain’s most sought-after water colourists known and collected for his whimsical images for children’s books.
