A Fine quarto volume in VG dust jacket, #32 of only 250 copies of this work signed by the author. The Ryerson Press, Toronto, 1958. Foreword by Lorne Pierce. Illustrated with 6 plates in full colour and 122 b&w images, all of art in the Sigmund Samuel Canadiana Collection at the Royal Ontario Museum. Spendlove was Curator of that Collection and Special Lecturer in the Department of Art and Archaeology at the University of Toronto. [xxi]{1} + 162 pp.; Bibliography; General Index; and Index of Authors, Engravers and Publishers.

The author’s many contributions as art critic and historian were acknowledged not only in his home country, but in Europe and America as well: he was a corresponding member of the Académie Internationale de la Céramique, Geneva; and has fellowships from the Royal Society of Arts, the Royal geographical Society, the Royal Asiatic Society, and the Museums Association, London.” This work melds the study of art with its historical background.

His other significant role was as an early and active member of the Bahá’í Faith in Canada. His connection with that community grew out of his friendship in Montreal with renowned Canadian architect W. Sutherland Maxwell and his family. His contributions in this arena were also international in scope, including service on the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of the British Isles . (cf. Will C. van den Hoonard, The Origins of the Bahá’í Community in Canada, Wilfred Laurier Press, 1998.)
