Major was a member of the Wolseley expeditionary force, and, in poetic form, recounts his journey to the Red River Settlement. Referring to the original printing of 1870, Peel writes: “This was probably the first pamphlet printed in English in Western Canada.” (Peel, 3rd, #579). That notable bibliographer has also penned the Introduction to the present work, noting: “This facsimile edition has been prepared from the only copy of Major’s poem known to have survived. The original is preserved in the library of the Public Archives of Canada, in Ottawa.” (P. viii) (cf. Peel, Early Printing in the Red River Settlement 1859-1870, for further information on the printer of the first edition, P. G. Laurie.)
An important early account of Red River history, as well as of the printing history of the young nation. The original title page is reproduced, including the author’s signature. The booklet is No. 3 of the Society’s Facsimile Series.
