Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, London, 1960. Near Fine – minor edge-wear - in (uncommon) dustwrapper. pp. [xv] 5-413; 10 Appendices; 21 Maps – all collated and present, and Fine; 20 Tables; contemporary archival photographs; Index and brief Erratum tipped in between the frontispiece and the title page. Roskill had un-restricted access to British archives and captured German Navy records in the possession of the Admiralty for his part in this United Kingdom Military Series on the history of the Second World War under the general Editorship of Sir James Butler. Preceded by two volumes focusing on The Defensive opening phase, and the subsequent Period of Balance, this work is able to stand on its own as a definitive source of material on that phase of the naval battles that occurred after the “Turn of the Tide”. Included one will find the strategies and elements of naval warfare that lead to the demise of the effectiveness of the ‘Wolf Packs’, the landings at Salerno and the ‘submission of the Italian fleet’, the ‘Bay of Biscay Offensive’, and the war in the Pacific. These successes are part of the foundation upon which the D-Day landings in June were built, a history well-studied; comparatively little has been written on the period covered by this volume, and certainly nothing as well-researched.
