Full title reads: Encyclopaedia Britannica; or a Dictionary of Arts and Sciences, Compiled Upon a New Plan. In Which the different Sciences and Arts are digested in distinct Treatises or Systems; and The various Technical Terms, &c. are explained as they occur in the order of the Alphabet. Illustrated with One Hundred and Sixty Copperplates. By a Society of Gentlemen in Scotland. In Three Volumes.
The first Britannica was published in three volumes in serial format between the years 1768 to 1771. The facsimile reproduction of the original was done to celebrate the 200th anniversary of that event, with the title page showing the original place of publication, Edinburgh, ‘Printed for A. Bell and C. Macfarquhar; and folded by Colin Macfarquhar, at his Printing Office, Nicolson Street.’. The three volumes are bound in faux-leather and reproduce all of the original copperplate engravings, several of which are in a fold-out format. The publishers have included a light foxing of the pages mimicking older text. The text is not only of interest in historical context - showing the state of scientific and medical knowledge of the time for example – but is itself an important part of publishing history in the English language. "The most famous of all Encyclopaedias in the English language." (Printing and the Mind of Man, p.218) A Fine set.
