With an Appendix on the Flora of Liberia by Dr. Otto Stapf, Principal Assistant, Kew Herbarium.  In Two Volumes, Hutchinson & Co., London, 1906.  First Edition.  Small quartos, pp. [xxviii] + 520,  and [xvi] + 521-1183.  Full colour botanical endpapers.

The author’s motivation for researching and writing this extensive study is candidly shared in the first line of the Preface (Vol. 1, p. v):  “The Republic of Liberia is an attempt and an atonement in which the author of this book takes a great interest.  It is an attempt to establish a civilised Negro State in the West African forest; and a somewhat paltry atonement which has been made by Britain and her Daughter in America, for the wrong-doing of the slave trade.”  The resulting work contains his 24 full-colour and 402 b&w illustrations, together with 24 Botanical Drawings by Matilda Smith and 22 Maps.  The latter include 4 folding maps, e.g. that “surveyed by Capt. H. D. Pearson . . .& Lieut. E. W. Cox”, with an internal border of approx. 30” x 13”.  Extensive bliography together with a listing of illustrations and maps.  Contents include Ancient History, much on the slave trade, geography, geology, flora, fauna and anthropology.

There is a p.o.n. in pen on the half-title and title pages of both volumes, as well as a blind stamp on each title page “with the publisher’s compliments”.  Hinges beginning, but binding sound on both, with minor bumps to the edges of the original maroon cloth.  Lovely gilt emblem on front boards.  Light penciled note verso ffep of Vol. 1.  VG+ overall.
