The publisher and The Wayfarer’s Bookshop went beyond the usual practices of ‘facsimile edition’ publishing, and matched the cloth, paper, gilt and blind stamping of the original publication by Tinsley Brothers, 1863. The printing was sold out soon after publication.
Burton was appointed “British Consul at Fernando Po, 1861-5, and at Santos, 1865-9, during both of which periods he made numerous journeys of discovery;”. (Oxford Concise Dictionary of National Biography). It was during this first appointment that he wrote the present text, with the intention of issuing it anonymously. It is for this reason that the spine of the first state of the Tinsley printing, reproduced faithfully here, bears the author’s name, as on the title page, “F.R.G.S.”. [Penzer, An Annotated Bibliography of Sir Richard Francis Burton, pp. 71-72.]. Despite the title and the annual salary, “Fernando Po was, in truth, no great honor. . . . ‘They wanted me to die,’, said Burton with bitterness, ‘but I intend to live, to spite the devils.’ He got himself together, books, writing materials, tropical clothing, medicines, a stock of drugs, including opium and Warburg’s drops, brandies, and all the other paraphernalia that experience had taught him was necessary for life in a primitive land.”
(Edward Rice, Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton, p. 459.)
